SIX months ago Gold Coast luxury boat builder Bill Barry-Cotter’s dream of a $500m marine precinct was marooned on a red tape sandbank — but today it’s full steam ahead again.
His company, Maritimo, yesterday lodged a development application with the Gold Coast City Council to subdivide a 42ha site at Coomera, just north of the existing Gold Coast City Marina complex.
“We already have a tick-off from the State Government, so now it totally depends on what the council choses to do.
“Hypothetically, if it was approved tomorrow we would begin work on it Monday.”
The boat builder said the project would create around 4000 jobs during the construction phase and up to 5500 positions when operational.
The land earmarked is understood to be worth around $30 million. It will be broken into several precincts, including 11ha of waterfront industry and shiplift facilities for manufacturing and repairs and 18ha for support industries, manufacturing and storage.
